Game Overview
Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a series of turn-based tactical role-playing simulation video games created by Japanese developer and publisher Koei (now Koei Tecmo). The series debuted in 1985 and has since become one of the longest-running and most respected strategy game franchises in history.
Based on the 14th-century historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" by Luo Guanzhong and the historical text "Records of the Three Kingdoms" by Chen Shou, the games recreate the events of the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD) of China. Players take control of one of the many warlords vying for control of China, managing military, economic, diplomatic, and political affairs.

Historical Context
The Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD) was one of the most turbulent and romanticized eras in Chinese history. Following the collapse of the Han dynasty, China fractured into three warring states:
The Three Kingdoms:
- Shu Han - Founded by Liu Bei, with Zhuge Liang as chief strategist
- Cao Wei - Established by Cao Cao and later by his son Cao Pi
- Eastern Wu - Founded by Sun Quan in southeastern China
This period is immortalized in Chinese literature, opera, and popular culture, particularly through the classic novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which blends historical fact with legend and folklore.
