What Is an .lrcat File?
An .lrcat file is a catalog file created by Adobe Lightroom, a professional photo editing and organization software. It stores metadata, editing history, keywords, ratings, and organizational structure for your photo library—but not the actual image files themselves.
How to Open an .lrcat File
To open an .lrcat file, you need Adobe Lightroom Classic (not Lightroom CC or the cloud version). Follow these steps:
- Launch Adobe Lightroom Classic on your computer.
- Go to File → Open Catalog…
- Browse to the location of your
.lrcatfile and select it. - Click Select (macOS) or Open (Windows).
Lightroom will load the entire catalog, including all edits and collections associated with it.
Important Notes
- Never move or rename your
.lrcatfile while Lightroom is running. - Always back up your catalog regularly—corruption can result in lost edits.
- The catalog file is usually accompanied by a
.lrdatafolder (for previews) and may reference photos stored elsewhere on your drive.
Troubleshooting
If Lightroom won’t open your .lrcat file:
- Ensure you’re using Lightroom Classic, not Lightroom (cloud-based).
- Check if the file is corrupted—try opening a backup copy.
- Verify that the original photo files haven’t been moved or deleted (Lightroom shows them as “missing” if so).
